Dear Sally: Brussels sprouts. Personally I love them, but for some reason whenever someone mentions that vegetable my father and friends shudder. I am curious, how can I make them so my family and friends will beg for another helping? Sincerely, Emma Perry
Sharp knife (adult needed)
Large skillet with lid
- 1 pound Brussels sprouts, trimmed and quartered
- 1⁄2 cup water
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon low-sodium soy sauce or balsamic vinegar
Put the Brussels sprouts and water into a large skillet on the stove. Turn the heat to high and and bring to a boil. Stir well, cover and cook 2 minutes.
Remove the top carefully and add the olive oil and soy sauce. Cook until the Brussels sprouts are just tender and lightly browned, about 5 minutes.
Serve right away.
Add lemon or orange zest or finely grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
