Summer is here and heat waves are all over Massachusetts. Stay cool in the heat and keep your body nourished. There are many foods that can also hydrate, which is extra important over the summer.

Drinks to Choose the Most
The first thing to remember in hot weather is to drink enough water. You do not need to buy bottled water to stay hydrated. It is not healthier or better than water right from the tap. Tap water in Massachusetts is safe, but you can check with your local town or city if you are worried about your local water for any reason.
If you do not like plain water, there are many other options. You can flavor water with your favorite fruits (or veggies). Berries, watermelon, peaches, and more can add some sweetness to your water. Cucumber water can add a little crisp and make water more exciting.
Getting kids to drink enough water can be an extra challenge, especially with so many sugar-sweetened drinks available. Kids should have no more than ten ounces of juice that is 100% juice with no added sugar. This is probably smaller than you think—ten ounces is just over one cup. You can use a measuring cup if you are unsure what this should look like.

Foods that Hydrate
There are many foods that can also help you hydrate. While water and other low or no sugar drinks are easy ways to hydrate, add some watery foods to your diet as well. Fruits and vegetables, in particular, often have a high amount of water. Watermelon, cantaloupe, berries, oranges, and apples are all great sources of water and other important nutrients. Some vegetables high in water include cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, and lettuce.
In addition to fruits and vegetables, you can make meals that can help hydrate you and your family. Salads, cold soups, and homemade ice pops are all great options to serve as a part of dinner. This Cold Soba Noodle Salad is full of delicious flavors and can help cool you down on a hot day. For dessert, try some Granola Popsicles that are packed with important vitamins and minerals.

Remember to Eat Enough
When it is hot outside, your body might not feel as hungry as usual. However, it is still just as important, if not more so, to eat enough food. Kids may be busy playing and not thinking about food. Once they come to the table though, they will be grumpy and hungry, and they will likely eat everything you make. They are losing important nutrients through sweat and extra physical activity. Replacing everything with water and enough food is essential all summer long.
