The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is one of four SNAP-Ed Implementing Agencies doing great work with people like you in our communities. Some of what they do takes place in classrooms leading nutrition classes, while other work may take place on the Food Bank teaching farms.
In May and June, the Food Bank hosted field trips for Springfield elementary school students to their farm in Hadley, MA. Students went through four stations learning about four different topics: climate change, sustainable farming, nature walks and animal prints, and healthy eating. Kristina Mullin, SNAP-Ed Program Manager at the Food Bank helped organize the healthy eating station. There, Abby Killian, a SNAP-Ed Educator at the Food Bank gave students a lesson on MyPlate and locally grown produce. Students could then make a smoothie with their favorite ingredients, including fruits and veggies, yogurt, and juices. They dropped everything in a blender and got on a stationary bike that powered the blender. While learning about healthy eating and local foods, students also got some physical activity while making delicious, refreshing smoothies.
