Discover the Power of Nutrition!

National Nutrition Month® Week 2: Find Advice Backed by Science

Welcome to week two of National Nutrition Month®. This week the focus is on how to find accurate sources for nutrition information. Sounds simple, so why is it so hard! We want to make understanding nutrition less complicated and provide you with the skills to separate fact from fiction. What are your nutrition questions? Is it hard for you to make healthier choices when you’re on the run? What are some great snacks that satisfy both you and your teens? Looking for ways to squeeze in more fruits and vegetables? Read on.

Are the Statements You See Fact or Fiction?

So how do you find nutrition information that’s accurate? The truth is, you likely already know. Let’s start with a Fact or Fiction quiz from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. How did you do? If you would like to dig a little deeper, here is a video created by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), where they provide great information on how to identify nutrition sources that are credible and how to separate solid nutrition information from wellness/influencer culture. This page from the USDA can also provide answers to your questions. In simple terms, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. You know more than you think you do. As the food writer Michael Pollan said, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

We want to provide you with the resources you need to eat well. Here are a host of nutrition tips that can provide information that will work for you. While we’re at it, let’s share some suggestions to dig into some Tips for Plant-Based Eating. Speaking of nutrition, let’s not forget about Food Safety. It’s always good to make sure we are using the right practices to keep us healthy.

While nutrition can be simple, our lives are not. Providing nourishing meals and snacks while also taking care of our families, working, and running a household is not easy or simple. Here are some tips that we hope will make it easier. Let’s start with your schedule. If you’re trying to eat healthy while on the run, whether through carry-out or if in a sit-down restaurant, here are some eating out tips to make choices that will support your and your family’s health.

Family and friends dining at an outdoor table under string lights by the pool. Evening social gathering with food and drinks. Summer celebration concept. Medium shot.

We know that you work hard to make the right choices. We also know that those choices can be challenging. Food is about more than our health and nutrition. Food brings us joy. Sharing a meal sustains us in times of grief, lifts up our cultures, helps shape traditions with our families, celebrate events, deepen connection, and more. So, enjoy the aroma from what you are baking in the oven and on the stovetop and look forward to sharing it with the people you love.
