SNAP-Ed work happens in many different ways all across Massachusetts. This month, we are highlighting Ascentria Care Alliance. In October, the Ascentria SNAP-Ed team participated in the Geek is Glam event at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for girls in grades 4-8.
This event is for young women to learn about careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and to hear from women working in various STEM fields. Ascentria’s Nutrition Educator Mais Hakmi represented food sciences and public health with a presentation on sugar’s impact on the body. She also participated in a career panel where young girls asked her questions about pursuing a career in STEM.
Participants in the event had the opportunity to hear a brief nutrition education lesson. This included decoding food labels to understand how much sugar is in different products. They also all had the opportunity to sample a watermelon strawberry smoothie, which is shown below.

Ingredients:
- 1 – 8 ounce lemon low fat yogurt
- 3 cups cubed frozen watermelon
- 1 pint fresh strawberries (cleaned and hulled)
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- A few ice cubes as needed
Directions:
- In a blender or food processor, combine yogurt and watermelon, strawberries, honey, and ice.
- Process until smooth and frothy.
- Serve immediately.
